Public Holidays=No special Offers

posted Jan 25, 2010 7:55 AM by Shikha S

I received this message from Vodafone today that the special offers on movies called "Vodafone Tuesday" is not applicable tomorrow ( 26th Jan is public holiday in India). Now is this a good move? When i first read this SMS, immediate thought was why?A weekday , plus a public holiday, it was a chance for them to increase more revenues. It would have worked both ways -one for multiplex and other for service provider.

Before two intercultural teams start working with each other a basic groundwork need to be done by HR/ Cultural officer wherein both the teams are given some initial info about the culture, working style etc so that initial hiccups do not occur. Widely ignored fact. Its left on the individuals how they develop their rapport.Tho most of the individuals have picked up their own formulae to solve this, but formal effort from HR team will be of great help.

Rain Jog

posted Nov 2, 2009 9:04 AM by Shikha S

You must have done jogging during morning and evening hours. Ample supply of Oxygen isn’t. And the only “sound” we hear is of birds or joggers discussing about latest news, happenings, elections etc.Did you ever get a chance for “Rain” Jog ? Imagine you are in high spirits as you are following your workout schedule religiously. You have just started with the first round and rain drops welcome you in the first day. Your first reaction will be “Oh no “..But if the passion for the workout is strong you will continue with your jog. I did the same when one fine early morning, monsoon mischievously came out to spoil my schedule. But I did not give in and did complete five track rounds. In the beginning I did feel the pinch of rain drops but after a while it did not matter that it was raining. All what mattered was that I had to complete at least few rounds rather than go back home cribbing about the weather.

Probably that’s why we hear if the determination is strong, nothing can stop you. This was just a small anecdote to support it.

Thank you note

How often have you received a personalized ThankYou note from your colleague ? Our work life is surrounded with High expectations, ”deadly “ deadlines, Amazing colleagues who have mastered the art of offloading the work on you ( well it is an art, that’s why “How to say No” self help books are so popular ).In the middle of haywire schedules, If an extra assignment pops up ( which always happen at short notice) which doesn’t pertain to your region ( Tho’ it does to your scope of work”), you would definitely feel irritated. But then we think of the words like “recession, lay-offs, EMI’s” etc. and put up a brave front with enthusiastic smile and complete the work by stretching yourself a “little bit”. Voila the work is appreciated and you forget the initial pain and irritation. And if you receive an extra topping in terms of “Handwritten Thank You Note “ and “Gift” , you go home smiling.

Think if you did anything like this to your colleague when he/ she bailed you out from a situation.

Why I was not involved?

posted Nov 2, 2009 8:58 AM by Shikha S

How often have you heard this phrase? Probably umpteen number of times from your reporting authority, senior guys, and colleagues who just crave for attention. These clan of people just do not understand that everyone is hard pressed and it is not somebody’s hobby to keep the relevant team members uninformed.(But if there are some who does it intentionally, then this post is not meant for them !!) It does happen sometimes that when you are working in an organization where there are more than ten people involved in any project and their OK matters for unknown reasons ,you might miss one. And then the person who was “Missed” creates a furore and tries to delay his/ her response creating additional tensions for you. At one point you are trying to give shape to your project and at another point he is disturbing the balance of the see-saw.

It’s an art to keep this specie pleased and requires quite a hands on. But yes they need to be kept in good humor and one need to learn the trick fast else they will wreck your humor :-)

Celebrations @ work

HR initiatives at our workplace are generally ignored and the emails which we receive from them usually goes into Trash folder ( unless it is some award/ certificate/ recognition/ monetary information). And if there is any “Team Building Activity” it is greeted with a big yawn. Poor HR fellows. They are always treated with a ”Touch me not” kind of attitude. Remember the HR interviews and sometimes they are the reason why we do not get that much sought after lucrative job. And what about the special occasion gatherings done on festivals. They have to send repeated reminders so that we can grace the occasion with our presence. On such days Internet connection should be disconnected for some time so that everybody move themselves from their cubicle and people who take leave; It should be unpaid leave !! Nevertheless, if this category is not present, then you would not be knowing the name of the person who sits next to you.

HR division is trying that colleagues at least like them ( Love factor will never come into play ).I am sure I will be in the hit list if my HR manager reads it !!

Latest History Chapters -Etiquette, Manners

posted Nov 2, 2009 8:54 AM by Shikha S

1.Online Seminar – You are the moderator of the session and the presenter has put his phone on general mode, he is online on all the messengers and other people regularly visit his cabin (not to miss the door sound)
2. Door is released swiftly without realizing many people are behind
3.Your status is Busy. People ask-Are you busy?
4. Status is “Do Not Disturb”- Chat messages keep on flashing
5.Middle of the meeting, your colleague’s phone rings with the latest Bollywood track
6.Jogging track – A lady is loudly talking on phone and cribbing about her hectic schedule
7.Conversation is going on and the other person is constantly checking his cellphone ………. And many more like this

Been a spectator for the above mentioned situations umpteen times. It’s quite a nuisance to see people behaving in such ill-mannered way @ work and in personal life .“Etiquette, Mannerism, Chivalry” has already become historical words.

There was an apt status message which I read sometime back “ The most difficult job which Kids face these days is to learn manners when they do not find any around them “

C.D.E of Goals

posted Nov 2, 2009 8:48 AM by Shikha S

You are trying hard to achieve a particular goal which you have defined for yourself, but not able to reach the desired result .Various tracking sheets are made, lot of analysis done. However. nothing inching you closer towards the finishing line. Somebody might say , passion is missing and he is not “Passionate “ enough to achieve the target. C.D.E can simplify the theory of passion :
  • Consistency – You start any activity with lot of zeal. Initial hoopla is always exciting, what matters is punching of “Consistent” efforts when the “exciting activity” becomes a part of your routine. Take any example from as simple as starting your workout, to posting regular blogs or preparing for any competitive exam. You have to push yourself, mind will resist because it was in slumber. We do not eat the entire pizza in one go, we break it in small small pieces.
  • Discipline – Consistent effort will not be effective if the boring word “discipline” doesn’t come into picture. Disciplined consistent effort is required. If you have decided on a specific time plan ,stick to it, no matter how many storms come up. The stormy weather will be “little difficult “ to withstand but once you conquer it , it will provide immense motivation to stick further to the plan.
  • Engagement- Total involvement in the cause/ task which you have taken up springs up results which might go beyond your imagination. Remember this was the task which you enthusiastically started, so why are you feeling low in energy now. Maintain the same zeal.
Consistent Discipline engaged efforts will help you in completing the journey which you have charted for yourself.

Out of Office Assistant

posted Nov 2, 2009 8:46 AM by Shikha S

You are on leave. Only your Boss or your immediate colleagues are aware about this fact. Mails flood your inbox and there are few tasks which requires your immediate intervention. Nobody knows if some matter is clamoring for attention. Out of Office assistant is a handy tool ( which is provided by all Email providers whether it is Outlook, Gmail etc) and it requires only few seconds to set up. Make sure you set it up even if you are going on leave for one day. Emergency always strikes when you least expect it. Remember Murphy’s Law!! Clearly mention who should be contacted in your absence. Even if your accessible on phone ,It is best to mention Name/Email Id phone number of your colleague because you never know when the network goes off for a toss.

Small things does make life easier for us and our colleagues around.

Insight-General Motors Diet Chart

posted Nov 2, 2009 8:45 AM by Shikha S

So you think you are fat ? You can consider your family, friends ,boyfriend, girlfriends comment about the extra baggage which you are carrying, but always trust the mirror J.If you had attempted weight loss activity in past or planning, I am pretty sure you know about GM diet chart. This is not published on GM’s website but you will find several blogs, forums actively talking about it.GM doesn’t hold any responsibility about this diet plan. How it came from where it came , nobody knows. Only thing is it works !! Me and my sister followed this routine religiously and we did manage to knock off few kilos. Few tricks which you should keep in mind :
  • Start this plan with somebody (friend, sister etc.).It is a great motivation and keep you going .But keep your mother/ father out of it as this is not meant for them. It will harm them instead of doing any good to them !!
  • Do exercise in the morning. Fresh air does wonders. I would recommend jog in a garden rather than workout in a gym
  • Record the start and end day when you start diet plan
  • Do measure your weight on all the seven days. But please do not be disheartened if it fluctuates. Your weight on the 8th Day matters
  • After you shift back to your normal diet , watch what you eat. It’s no good following this diet and going back to your old eating habits
  • Exercise Exercise regularly. That’s the mantra
Do not expect over night results. Remember it took you long to put on that extra skin and it will take some time when you can see desired results. Have Patience.”C.D.E” to lose weight will work!!
